As a result of its location, Didim is surrounded with a variety of historical sites to visit. Another example to these important historical places is Milet which is known as the city of the great philosophers of ancient times. Milet is only 20 kms away from Didim. Tales, who is one of the seven wise men of the archaic period, Anaksimandros who drew the first map in the world, Hekaitos who is a philosopher and a historian and Hippodamos who is an architect all lived in the ancient city of Milet. This city which was located on the seashore in ancient times, now stands in the middle of the plain as a result of the alluvions ( clay and soil ) brought by the Büyük Menderes River.
Another “work of art” that the Büyük Menderes River has produced is the Bafa Lake which is only 30 kms away from Didim. Bafa used to be a bay of the Aegean sea , however the clay and soil brought by the river have blocked the way to the sea and caused this bay to turn into a lake.
Akbük which is a pretty holiday city is only 15 kms away from Didim. Akbük is famous for bringing the beauties of the blue sea and green of the environment together. The ancient city of Priene; an important city of the Byzantine, Doganbey; an old Greek village famous for its interesting stone houses, Karina and Kazikkoyu which are beautiful natural sites, and the national park of Dilek Peninsula… The beautiful historical sites of Didim are numberless.
